Aloshikha RDC

Bangladesh is one of the poorest countries in the world. Of the 140 million inhabitants, approximately 70 million live beneath the poverty line, which lies at an income of € 2 per day. In the Netherlands, we can barely comprehend this, but for the people in Bangladesh, it is a harsh reality.
Although fighting poverty is high on the list of government priorities, it remains difficult to achieve structural improvements in the areas that are hard to reach. Chronicle lack of money and education, and not to mention corruption, have weakened the system.

Aloshikha Rajihar Social Development Centre is a Bangladeshi non-profit organisation that supports the local population in various ways. Aloshikha's working area is situated 200 km south of the country's capital Dhaka, in a delta area that is submerged by floods on a yearly basis.

Since Aloshikha RSDC was founded in 1985, it has developed programmes in the fields of education, health care, rural development and micro credit in order to help the poor inhabitants of the area and make them self-supporting. There are approximately 200.000 people in Aloshikha's working area.Aloshikha RSDC was founded by the Bengali Halder family. James- Mridul Halder (president) and Benjamin Halder (vice-president) work for Aloshikha on a full-time basis. James-Mukul Halder works as vice-chairman of the board, alongside his job with a telephone company.

Over the years, Aloshikha RSDC has grown considerably. Every day, a total of 95 steady employees are committed to helping the poor people in the area. The organisation is monitored by a board of directors. This board of directors plays an important role in setting out a strategic course. Naturally, the board takes into account the opinions of Aloshikha staff and its target groups. Both the local and national government regularly check on the work done by Aloshikha RSDC. Furthermore, there is an advisory committee, which two members of the Dutch Aloshikha Foundation are part of.
