Cyclone rages across Aloshikha work (November 16, 2007)

On Thursday 15 November, Bangladesh was hit by a powerful cyclone that slammed into the coast and across the south of Bangladesh at a speed of 260kph. In addition to causing a huge amount of material damage, the cyclone has left many injured or dead.

For some 10 hours, the destructive whirlwind scourged across the area in which Aloshikha RSDC works. Reports and photos from Aloshikha RSDC paint a very sad picture. Many tin and bamboo houses have been destroyed, injuring many people in the process and leaving them homeless. People have also been reported missing or dead. Exact details has been difficult to obtain as some areas are still inaccessible.

The Aloshikha RSDC hospital has also been seriously damaged. Parts of the roof were blown away and trees have fallen onto the building. The ambulance garage was hit and damaged by a fallen tree and a collapsed wall has meant that the ambulance has been unable to move out of the garage. As yet, the precise extent of the damage to the hospital and ambulance cannot be determined. A number of pre-schools have also been completely destroyed and the roofs of twelve PRIMA buildings have been either seriously damaged or completely blown off. All in all, this is a huge catastrophe. Once more it is the poorest people in Bangladesh that are being affected. The Aloshikha Foundation will provide help wherever it can and your financial contributions are most welcome.
