Population
Bangladesh has approximately 140 million inhabitants. Most of them are Muslims (85%). Another 14% are Hindus and 1% profess other religions, such as Buddhism and Christianity. The majority of the population are Bengali, but there are also some Biharis and a few native tribes, such as the Garo and the Monipuri in the north and some thirteen tribes in the Chittagong mountains in the south-east.
Most Bengalis live in simple bamboo shacks without electricity or running water. Poor economic conditions drive many people from the countryside to the cities. This migration resulted in the rise of slums, in which living conditions are terribly poor. There is a growing middle-class, who live in small apartments.
The average education level of the people in Bangladesh is fairly low. In 1996, 62% of children under the age of 15 was illiterate. The average life expectancy is 60 years. Considering all this, the population's enormous resilience is remarkable. After every flood, they simply move on with their lives.
